I think the best course of action is to first try uninstalling all the different versions of USB/Serial adaptor drivers from the PC. I believe that there are counterfeit Prolific chips that are incompatible with the Prolific drivers (this is what is alluded to on the Prolific website). Your Prolific chip requires a special version of the Prolific driver from the adaptor manufacturer
The reason the Prolific driver is not working could be one of two reasons: I am, therefore not surprised that the WCH chip does not work for you. I downloaded the latest driver from the WCH Chinese website but the file appeared to have a Trojan so I never installed it. I have never been able to get the WCH chip working on Vista or Win7 with the driver installed from the CD supplied with the adapter. So what Device Manager is showing is correct for a Prolific driver on XP - except of course the driver is not working!

The driver installer package 1.2.10, will install driver version 2.0.13.130 for XP, and 3.3.11.152 for Win7.
What you have is correct for XP, Win7 will install a different version. As Martin suggested, it is a driver problem.įirstly, with regard to the Prolific driver versions. We seem a last to be homing in on the cause of the problem. This seems to get more puzzling by the day ! Why the dates shown on the website and what shows in device differ I do not know but this latest driver does not work on either of my machines. I have been on the Prolific website and downloaded the latest Driver and this shows as Driver v.1.2.10īut when I look in device manager there is a yellow triangle with the message this device cannot start (Code 10) Returning to the Prolific set up the driver was supplied on disk and shows as Driver 2.0.2.1 When doing the cable test ( with pins 3 & 4 connected ) all I am getting is Error location 1 Error waiting for 6 The report on the CH340 using USBDview is,
